Smithfield Foods Inc. will be closing six of its plants along with the layoffs of 1,800 workers. Rivals have already went into bankruptcy while Smithfield is struggling to stay afloat. The world's largest pork processor has already cut production by 10% to attempt to stop the oversupply of poultry among other things.
This is a bad day for at least 1,800 people.

THIS REALLY SUCKS...AS A SMITHFIELD EMPLOYEE I WORRY. TODAY WE HAD A MEETING AT OUR 4 OCLOCK BREAK. WE WERE INFORMED ON THE CRISIS THAT IS OCCURING BUT REALLY GIVEN NO DEFINATE ANSWER TO THE MADNESS THAT ROARS WITHIN' OUR BEING; ATLEAST NOT MINE. I AM A FATHER OF 2 AND A DEVOUT HUSBAND WHO'S WIFE IS TEMPORARLY DISABLED. WE WERE LOOKING TO RELOCATE TO FLORIDA WHERE MY WIFE AND I COULD RECIEVE A LITTLE HELP FROM HER FAMILY WITH OUR LITTLE ONE, TO CUT BACK ON DAYCARE EXPENSES SO SHE COULD GET BACK INTO SCHOOL TO FINISH THE REST OF HER GI BILL,(SHE ONLY HAS 2 YEARS LEFT), NOW THE PLANT CITY FACILITY IS CLOSING. I GUESS WE HAVE TO RE-ROUTE OUR PLANS. I GUESS THIS ISN'T IN THE CARDS. NOW I'M JUST HOPING I HAVE A JOB THIS 2009......CONCERNED EMPLOYEE, CLAYTON DIVISION......
